Do you have 2 min to significantly increase your ability to drink less?

It's simple really.

Write down specifically what you are going to drink tomorrow.

Two minutes and your payoff is huge.

Why does this work?

  • It engages the prefrontal cortex in making this decision. The prefrontal cortex is the executive part of the brain that is responsible for our best long term interests. This is the part of the brain that we want making these decisions so planning 24 hours in advance bypasses the primitive brain. The primitive brain makes decisions about what to drink in the moment. It is very responsive to cravings. This is why I think of the primitive brain like a toddler who just wants what it wants, when it wants it.

  • The practice of deciding forces the brain to start visualizing what will happen. In thinking through what you are going to drink, you naturally start preparing. How are you going to handle that that dinner out with friends or the party? Visualization is such a powerful, yet underutilized tool. I would love to know your opinion on this - do you think that it is because it feels too woo-woo?

    • There is more and more research that proves that the brain can change.

    • One of my favorite examples is when participants practiced a one handed piano exercise for 2 hours a day for five days. There were two research groups - one group physically practiced on the piano and the other group mentally rehearsed.

    • The amazing part is that brain scans showed no discernable difference between clusters of neurons in the different groups.

    • This showed that we can change our brain by thinking differently!

    • How can you apply this on your own journey to drink less?

  • After you have written it down, review it and give it the gut check. Is this really what you are going to want to do when the rubber hits the road? Why or why not?

A lot can happen in these two minutes and it is definitely a habit that pays off in dividends. If you invest this little bit of time into setting yourself up for success, you will find it easier and easier to make a plan and stick to it. The best strategic byproduct of the whole process is that you will get your self-trust back.

Isn't that worth two minutes?

Here is the form that I use with my clients to record their plan AND if you want to take it a step further, to capture the day after evaluation.

Every week I provide you with tips and or new ways to think to help you drink less. This is helpful for a lot of you, but if you are one of those people who read through them, but never quite seem to do them, then you are a great candidate for coaching.

Why? Because working with a coach will provide you with some awareness about WHY you aren't taking action. Uncovering these reasons, helps create different habits and therefore different results.

I would love to work with you personally to help you unblock whatever it is that is keeping you from taking action to get the results that you want.

Thanks, Maya, but sometimes we can know better and still not do better and that’s ok.
