Thinking on Purpose

Why do we argue for what is wrong with our lives? Everyone does it, it isn't just you.

  • My co-worker undermines me, that’s just the way that It is.

  • My partner loves his golf outing more than spending time with our family.

  • I can't accept a compliment because it doesn't feel true.

  • I am a bad mom because my son is flunking out of school and has so much potential.

  • I can't handle the stress and I need a glass of wine to take the edge off.

But why?

This happens because the primitive brain has a negativity bias. It is always scanning for reasons to criticize and catastrophize.

But just because you have a thought does not mean that it is

a) true

or

b) that you have to believe it.

This concept has changed my life.

I consider myself well educated- college-prep secondary school, highly competitive undergraduate degree, and two masters degrees. I was taught critical thinking but was never taught to apply critical thinking to my own thinking. As a result, I believed my thoughts, until I was introduced to coaching and learned how to manage my mind.

You can override the negative bias by thinking on purpose.

What we know for sure is that when we focus on what is wrong with our lives, that is what we see and the experience that we create for ourselves feels terrible.

You can actively choose to give equal airtime to what doesn't suck about your life.

Come on - you can find plenty to of things for which you are grateful. Do this work - it is important.

With the right tools and guidance, you can rewire your brain to think differently about your life and yourself.

This is called managing your mind.

You alone get to decide what you think. No one can make you think anything. Why not focus on what is going right?

This is an important step in learning how to drink less and create a life that you love. Once you learn how to critically examine and dismantle the thoughts that are causing stress in your life, you will never again feel the need to drink to “make it go away.” You will redirect all of that brain power towards creating a life that you never want to numb out of.

Want to learn how? Just hit reply and I will show you.

I used to think that my life sucked, now I know that that my thoughts about my life sucked.

I am so much happier now that I have the tools to manage my mind around whatever comes up for me. Join me, the water is nice over here!

Take care,

Caroline
