New Urge Interruption Technique
Without the craving/urge to drink, becoming a person who drinks less would be a breeze.
Think about it. You would just decide.
End of story.
No struggling or resisting when you get home from work or are making dinner or when you are upset about something.
This is why I spend time developing tools that help my clients deal with their urges.
And this is why I am very excited to share with you a very effective tool that I have developed for you!
I have cheery picked from different modalities to develop this practice for you. I have done all of the work of sorting through a lot of different options and pulled together the best of the best.
Here is a video that walks you through it.
Here are some highlights of the different sections and why they are important.
1) Tapping the karate chop part of your hand immediately interrupts the urge. It acts like a wakeup call to get you out of autopilot and engage your conscious brain. During this opening step, you will start off by acknowledge what is real for you in the moment.
2) Drop into your body and describe what the sensations feel like. Be as specific as possible. This pulls the brain out of freak out mode and gives it something more productive to do. It is also an invaluable reminder that these sensations in your body are not the end of the world.
3) Tell yourself the truth - the urge is telling you that you want something, but you know that you don't want the wine because that doesn't align with your goals.
4) Once you have peeled that back, you can get to what is really going on. As yourself - what is it that I really need right now?
5) Evaluate. Now you are in a better position to choose better actions.
Try it out. I would love to hear your thoughts and how it works for you.
